Comeback on the radar for Chesterfield striker Will Grigg

Striker Will Grigg could still play part for Chesterfield this season as he inches his way back to full fitness.

Grigg suffered a hamstring injury in the defeat to Oldham Athletic last month and it was feared it was season-over for the experienced front man.

Today brought more encouraging news.

Assistant manager Danny Webb said Grigg was getting “ever closer” to being able to play and would travel with the squad to Fleetwood tomorrow.

"We’ll see but that might be just to be part of it again,” added the number two.

Grigg has made 33 appearances in all competitions, netting five times. He is contracted at the SMH until summer 2027.

The player will travel with a group wanting to back up the midweek win over Grimsby Town and drive further into the League Two play-off places.

Fleetwood have had an in and out season, hence why they’re 16th. They changed manager in January, swapping Pete Wild (now Tranmere Rovers boss) for long-serving coach Matt Lawlor.

The Cod Army won 2-1 at Accrington Stanley last weekend with a stoppage-time winner.

"They have some very good players,” added Webb. “They go with two up front normally and they’re a handful.

"There’s the lad (Will) Davies and everyone knows Ched Evans from his time here and with Sheffield United.

"As a defensive unit we have got to be on our mettle for balls into the box and runs in behind while knowing that when we get the ball let’s play our stuff.

"Let’s play some attacking football and get our supporters singing like we did the other night.”
