Cancer Pitstop support group - founded by neighbours - is looking to expand into towns around Derbyshire

MP hears about group’s aims for the future after inviting members to parliament.

Members of Belper’s Cancer Pitstop were invited by their MP to visit the Houses of Parliament in recognition of the oustanding community support network they have built since the group was founded 18 months ago.

Jonathan Davies, who is MP for Mid Derbyshire, said: “It was a pleasure to welcome members of Cancer Pitstop to parliament and to hear about their ambitions for the future. Alongside its successful men’s and women’s groups in Belper, the organisation is now looking to expand into other Derbyshire towns so that even more people can benefit from the support, companionship and community it offers.”

Tony Waldron, co-founder of Cancer Pitstop, said: “It was a very interesting visit, and we were really grateful to have the opportunity to attend. It was great to meet Jonathan again and talk to him about the important work and continued interest he has in our pitstop.”

The visit occurred at a significant time, with the government‘s National Cancer Plan for England setting out ambitions to improve cancer outcomes, support earlier diagnosis, reduce inequalities and ensure more people can live well with - and beyond - cancer. The work of Cancer Pitstop demonstrates the vital role that community organisations play in providing practical and emotional support to people affected by cancer and their families.

Tony and his neighbour Mark Refearn launched the pitstop group in April 2025 after they were both diagnosed with cancer. They recognised the need for a space where people could come together for support, friendship and understanding, while also having the chance to talk about life beyond their diagnosis.

What started as a small initiative has grown into a thriving network supporting people living with cancer, those undergoing treatment, cancer survivors and family members caring for loved ones. Run entirely by volunteers, Cancer Pitstop is generously supported by Belper & Duffield Rotary Club, the Royal British Legion and local businesses whose contributions help keep the group running and free to attend.

MP Jonathan Davies said: ““During the third day of my recent walk across Mid Derbyshire, I visited the men’s Cancer Pitstop session at the Belper Royal British Legion Club. More than 30 people attended, and it was immediately apparent how important the group has become. The room was filled with positivity, friendship and genuine camaraderie, with members supporting one another while sharing stories, laughter and conversation.

“Tony and Mark have created something truly special. Their willingness to turn their own experiences into a source of strength for others has helped build a community that reminds people they are not facing cancer alone.”
