Chesterfield town centre café hit by power cut during roadworks as disruption continues

“We were partially in the dark. Fridges and freezers were down.”

A Chesterfield town centre café has been hit by a partial power cut due to a fault caused following excavation works.

Board & Bean Café, which has recently moved to South Street, was left with ‘only a fraction’ of electricity on Sunday, October 25, after a cable was damaged during roadworks.

The utility repair and maintenance roadworks, which are still underway at South Street, are being carried out by water provider Severn Trent.

Andrew Yates, one of the owner at Board & Bean Café, said: “We were partially in the dark.

“Fridges and freezers were down.

“We were chugging through the day on a fraction of the power and one of our phases was missing.”

A spokesperson for Severn Trent has since confirmed that a ‘cable was damaged following our excavation work’.

Later on Sunday, National Grid teams were called to restore electricity to Board & Bean Café and almost 30 other properties affected.

Andrew added: “The National Grid guys were fantastic.

“They were out there in the rain and wind and they sorted it out in the evening.”

National Grid has confirmed they were called to an incident on Sunday and restored energy to 29 properties.

Further work is required to repair the damaged cable.

A National Grid Electricity Distribution spokesperson said: “We attended South Street in Chesterfield on the morning of Sunday 25 October following a fault on an underground electricity cable, which affected supplies to 29 properties.

“All supplies were restored by 1.17am on Monday.

“Our engineers are continuing work on South Street to locate and repair the cable fault, which requires an excavation in the footway.

“We'd like to thank customers for their patience and understanding as we worked to reconnect them."

South Street remains closed to any vehicles, with roadworks set to continue until tomorrow (Wednesday, October 28).

Businesses on the street are open as usual with pedestrian access maintained.

A spokesperson for Severn Trent said: “We’re sorry for the disruption caused on South Street.

“Our teams are currently carrying out repairs to the network, which they’re hoping to resolve as soon as possible, we appreciate everyone’s patience while we do this.”
