Reports of ambulance unable to get through as roadworks cause disruption in Chesterfield town centre

A Chesterfield town centre road is closed due to repair and maintenance works.

Motorists are warned of disruption in Chesterfield town centre today (Monday, October 26).

South Street, which connects Beetwell Street and Vicar Lane, is currently closed to allow for utility repair and maintenance works.

The works, which started yesterday (Sunday, October 25), are being carried out by water provider Severn Trent.

The works permit issued by Derbyshire County Council indicates that the road will remain closed until Wednesday, October 28, unless works are completed early.

Businesses on the street are open as usual with pedestrian access maintained, but the street remains closed to all vehicles.

Witnesses and business owners have reported an incident involving an ambulance with blue lights on, which had to turn around due to the road closure earlier today.

Andrew, one of the owners, Board & Bean Café: “They gave us no notice at all. We didn't know they were coming out.

“We are mainly affected when getting to our kitchen for loading and unloading.

“Getting supplies is a bit a pain at the moment.”

Adrian, manager at Cafe & Restaurant at South Street said: “We are not affected too badly, with people still being able to walk to us.

“But delivery drivers and disabled people are affected with not being able to park.

“There was an ambulance, which couldn’t get down because they put(traffic) cones there.

“The cones prevented it from going down the road.

“It had to reverse and go back a different way.”

Severn Trent, Derbyshire County Council and East Midlands Ambulance Service have been approached for a comment.
