Chesterfield defender pictured in Shrewsbury Town away end at Wolves - fans sing song about him

With Storm Goretti causing Chesterfield’s match against Colchester United to be postponed on Saturday, one Spireites player went to watch his former club in action in the FA Cup.

The decision to call-off the visit of Colchester was made two days before the game was due to go ahead, which raised eyebrows, but proved to be correct with freezing temperatures over the weekend.

After a busy period of five fixtures in 15 days, the postponement won’t have done the Blues any harm, and it gave them the opportunity to get some much-needed rest ahead of some important matches this month against teams in and around them in the League Two table.

Chey Dunkley would not have played against Colchester as he recovers from what is said to be short-term injury. But the free weekend gave him the opportunity to watch his former club Shrewsbury Town in action at Wolves in the third round. Sadly for the Shrews, the Premier League club’s bottom club ran out 6-1 winners, although the visitors did threaten to make a contest of it when they pulled a goal back to make it 2-1. But the hosts then showed their top-flight quality to secure their place in round four.

Pictures emerged online of Dunkley, mingling with Shrewsbury fans in the away end. The defender often speaks fondly about all of his former clubs and the Shrews are no different. And those who had made the journey to Molineux showed their appreciation for him, apparently singing ‘sign him up sign him up.’

Dunkley wrote on his social media: “SALOP we’re in my town … So it was only right … @ 2-1 it may have been a different story - Wolves weren’t great… Hard Times Do Not Last; hopefully the current team will come good stick by them…”

Chesterfield beat Shrewsbury 1-0 last month, and Michael Appleton’s men are on thin ice currently as they sit jus one place and one point above the drop zone.

‘Big Dunks’, who is fairly active on social media and often interacts with fans, gave his opinion when asked if he thought the struggling Shrews could avoid relegation this season. He replied: “On paper (keyword) they should avoid the drop… massive game for them next week… I understand fan frustration as it hasn’t been right for some time at the club but after all the adversity at the club… the lads need the fans more than ever to get the result - that’s for sure.”
