Former Belper Town, Gainsborough Trinity, Boston United, Stamford, Frickley Athletic and Matlock Town striker forced to retire from football
Matlock Town striker Jonathon Margetts has announced his retirement from football at the age of 32 after suffering a reaction following summer knee surgery.
It comes as a shot for the Doncaster-born goal-getter who had been expected to play a key part in Town’s upcoming season.

The Gladiators paid tribute to Margetts’ career in a statement released this week.
“Everyone at the club is understandably devastated by the news, as is Jonathon himself,” it read.
“As a club, we are immensely proud to have played a part in Jonathon’s story. Throughout an outstanding career, he has created countless special memories, many of which came during his time with us.
“His goals, commitment and professionalism have left a mark on the club forever, while his character and humility earned him the respect and admiration of teammates, staff, supporters and everyone fortunate enough to share a dressing room with him.
“Jonathon leaves the game with a legacy to be immensely proud of, but more importantly, he leaves with lifelong friendships and the gratitude of everyone connected with this football club.
“Jonathon, along with his family, will always be welcome at the Proctor Cars Stadium, a place that they will forever be able to call home.
“Everyone at Matlock Town Football Club wishes Jonathon and his family nothing but happiness, good health and success in whatever comes next. Thank you for everything, Johnny.”
Margetts enjoyed spells with Frickley,, Belper, Stamford and Kings Lynn and was somewhat of a prolific striker during those spells.
He scored 26 goals in 29 games for Frickley before perhaps his best season came in 2022/23 when he scored 46 goals on his way to a title-winning season with Stamford.
In May 2023, Margetts, who played ten times for Tranmere in the 2015/16 season returned to Matlock Town.
