Man handed suspended sentence after “horrifying” incident in Chesterfield - during which he attacked teenage girl, woman and female police officer

A man was handed a suspended sentence after a “horrifying” incident - during which he attacked a teenage girl, a woman and a female police officer in Chesterfield.

A man who assaulted a woman, a teenage girl and a female police officer in Chesterfield has been given a suspended sentence after appearing in court.

Michael Searson committed the offence against the teenager, who was known to him, on July 11 - when he put his hands around her neck and pushed her against a wall.

The girl’s mum then began hitting Searson to make him stop and Searson pushed her to the face before walking away.

Police were called to the address in Chesterfield and while a female police officer was speaking to the woman, Searson became abusive towards her. He then dragged her and threw her out of the property.

A second male police officer had to intervene and a struggle began, during which a Taser had to be deployed to subdue Searson before he could be arrested.

The 40-year-old has now been handed an 18-month prison sentence, suspended for 21 months, after admitting intentional strangulation, assault by beating and assaulting an emergency worker by beating. He denied a charge of assaulting the male officer and the matter was ordered to lie on file.

Searson, of Queen Elizabeth Close, Louth, has also been ordered to complete 300 hours unpaid work, abstain from alcohol for six months and to take part in an accredited programme.

He was also handed restraining orders banning him from having any contact with the woman and her family for 5 years.

Detective Constable Sarah Drabble, who led the investigation, said: “It is clear that Searson is a man who struggles to control his violent temper.

“The way he behaved towards his victims – including two police officers – was horrifying and simply not acceptable.

“I’d like to thank them all for their co-operation and support throughout this case which has enabled us to charge Searson and see him dealt with in court.

“The teenager and woman involved in this case have demonstrated incredible bravery throughout as did the officers who put themselves in harm’s way to protect them.

“While Searson has not received an immediate custodial sentence for these offences, I hope that the punishment handed out by the courts encourages him to think again about his behaviour and helps him see the error of his ways.”
