Chesterfield chief trained on ironing out their issues ahead of FA Cup tie

‘We have a group of lads that clearly are talented but we clearly need to brush up on aspects of the game’

Manager Paul Cook says there is no substitute for hard graft on the training ground as Chesterfield look to tighten up in time for cup weekend.

Town have the second highest “Goals For” tally in League Two but the second highest “Goals Against” total in the top half.

It is an imbalance Cook recognises needs addressing if a team that has entertained and frustrated in equal measure are to start unlocking their full potential and stitching together a consistent run.

Speaking ahead of Saturday’s FA Cup tie against Yeovil, he said: “We have a team and a group of lads that clearly are talented but we clearly need to brush up on aspects of the game. That’s obvious and that for me comes from the training from Monday to Friday, from watching your clips and learning how we need to be better when those moments come when we haven’t got the ball.

“So many people talk nonsense about football now and are paid to talk nonsense.

“That’s the world we live in. It is so much easier to be negative than positive.

“My world has always been - watch back, train, repetition and be better at what you’re trying to do. For us, clearly we give too many goals away. We are also second leading scorers in the division.”

Managed by Billy Rowley, Yeovil are going well in the National League. They’re fifth in the table and have a decent away record despite last week’s 2-0 dip at Halifax.

“The FA Cup is a great competition,” added Cook.

“We are going to do our best to be in the second round but I’m sure Yeovil are going to have a lot to say about it.”

As of yesterday the Glovers had sold more than 400 tickets in just over 24 hours for the tie.

There are now no replays from the first round proper onwards, drawn matches instead going to extra time and penalties.

Kick-off is 3pm.
