“Please think twice” – Police issue warning to people entering open water as heatwave continues across Derbyshire
Police have urged people to think twice before entering open water as the current heatwave continues across Derbyshire.
Derbyshire Police have called for people to behave responsibly and avoid swimming in open water – with the heatwave bringing temperatures of more than 30°C across the county.

A force spokesperson said: “With temperatures rising during this heatwave, it’s tempting to cool off in rivers, lakes, and open water – but please think twice.
Open water can be far more dangerous than it looks. Cold water shock can hit instantly, even on hot days. Strong currents and hidden hazards can pull you under
”Sudden drops in depth make it unsafe for even strong swimmers, and often there are no lifeguards or safety measures nearby.
“Every year, lives are lost because people underestimate these risks. Enjoy the sunshine, but don’t let one decision turn a great day into a tragedy.”
People have been urged to use supervised swimming areas, never swim alone, avoid drinking alcohol near water and enter water slowly to avoid shock.
