WATCH: Bold bakery owner confronting culprit who stole from her cake shed in north Derbyshire
‘I'm not a confrontational person but I thought I'm not letting it happen to my business’
A baker has sent out a strong message that thieves will not be tolerated by challenging a man who raided her cake shed.
Jade Walton, who owns JD Bakes in Clay Cross, gave chase and confronted the culprit after two cake slices and a cookie went missing on Monday.
She said: “I was so cross and upset - adrenaline just took over.”
Her bold stand came after Jade was working in the bakery making cookie dough when she heard a camera go off. She said: “I just happened to look at the snippet which gives you a little preview and I could see the person, hood up and part of the face covered.
"I stepped over to the window where I can see the cake shed and the person had already gone. So I quickly loaded up my Ring camera to see if they had taken anything - and they had.
" I ran out, looked in the car park and down the street and went to come back in and I thought 'no - they are not getting away with it’.
"I went on to High Street and saw them. I'm not a confrontational person but I thought I'm not letting it happen to my business. I threw my phone on record, just for my sake in case anything happened, and chased down the street.
"I was quite a distance away from him when I said 'excuse me....you took some items..’ He already had one half-eaten in his hand - lemon drizzle - and he took one out of his jacket. I said 'no, you took more than that’, so he came right up to me and passed me another one." He muttered 'sorry' a couple of times and just walked off.
"I was shaking - I couldn't believe that I'd done it, stood up for myself and my little business.
"I thought to myself afterwards, was I brave or was I stupid?"
Just a fortnight ago, a thief targeted Jade's cake shed on Eldon Street which she operates under an honesty box system.
Jade said: "Ninety-nine percent of the people who come are honest and I appreciate every single customer....I just don't want the odd one to spoil it for the many.
"I've seen many other cake businesses who have got the sheds that have the issue - I feel that business owners should stand together and show that it's not okay."
A spokesperson for Derbyshire Police said: "The incident has been reported to us and lines of enquiry, including footage of the individual who stole the items, is being reviewed and pursued. No arrests have been made at this time."
