Derbyshire driver who stopped in front of police car with blue lights and siren risked jail

A disqualified Derbyshire driver who braked sharply in front of an unmarked police car when its blue lights and siren were activated ran the risk of being jailed, a court heard.

Justinas Janonis obstructed the officers in a silver Mercedes as they were en route to an incident on Western Boulevard, in Nottingham, on 11.30am on May 15, Nottingham Crown Court was told.

He initially gave false details but his identity was confirmed by a picture on his mobile phone and checks revealed he was disqualified until June 13.

The court heard he was banned for drink driving in October 2024 and received a six-month prison sentence, suspended for 12 months, at Sheffield Crown Court for handling stolen goods, last January.

Emma Coverley, mitigating, said Janonis had attended one third of all his probation appointments but failed to complete one day of his unpaid work.

His probation officer had tried to contact him to discuss his absence, she added, but prior to this he received "excellent feedback".

"He has fallen at the final hurdle," said Ms Coverley.

"It's the final hurdle in everything because he was in the final month of his disqualification period," said Recorder Ruth Coffey.

Janonis, 36, of Norman Road, Ripley, admitted breaching a suspended sentence and driving while disqualified and without insurance at a previous hearing.

On Tuesday, he was fined £70, his driving ban and suspended sentence were extended by six months each, and he was ordered to complete 30 more hours of unpaid work.
