“She first joined as a supervisor at Walton Hospital back in 2001 and was promoted to deputy manager in 2019, overseeing the team based at Derbyshire Healthcare’s Hartington Unit.
“Sandra’s team particularly pointed to how proud she was to have worked for the NHS and what a supportive and kind-hearted colleague she was.”
Tracy Allen, chief executive of the trust, added: “This is a day I desperately wished we would not have to face, and it comes as a poignant reminder of the situation we are indeed facing every day.

“We are working closely with Sandra’s colleagues, and her husband Craig, to offer all the support we can at this terribly sad time.”
In September last year, Amnesty International said at least 7,000 health workers have died around the world after contracting Covid-19 – with 649 deaths in the UK, the third-highest reported figure for any country globally.
Stephen Cockburn, head of economic and social justice at Amnesty International, said: “For at least 7,000 people to die while trying to save others is a crisis on a staggering scale.”
