Whilst Covid-19 restrictions likely mean we’re still months away from a return to busy venues, the new ‘Dirty Stop Out’s Guide to 1980s Chesterfield – Aquarius Edition’ is a reminder of a simpler time - when the dancefloor at the Sheffield Road venue was never empty.

Disco sounds, chicken-in-a-basket meals, and performances from some of the biggest stars on the planet were on the menu week after week.

Author Neil Anderson said: “No nightclub in the town enjoyed the longevity of the Aquarius; it held a special place in the heart of generations of club-goers.

“Originally opening as a cabaret club in 1972, tens of thousands of revellers made the weekend pilgrimage on one of the double-decker buses from the town centre.”

Chesterfield star Bernie Clifton was one of the earliest comperes at the Aquarius – famous as the venue that gave Cannon & Ball their first headline billing, and saw everyone from Marti Caine to Bob Monkhouse grace the stage.

Neil added: “I’m indebted to the scores of people that contributed to the book and were kind enough to share their memories.

“It has been especially pleasurable to work with former Aquarius photographer David Miller, who gave me permission to use some of his incredible archive.

“Though Covid 19 has forced me to move the title’s launch party back to 2021, I wanted to ensure the book was out for Father’s Day next month. So many people are waiting for it.”
