The 28-year-old, who was a free agent, has been handed the number one shirt.

With Lucas Covolan suspended for the next three matches and with no other goalkeeper on the books, the Spireites were in desperate need of another stopper before this Saturday’s home clash against Aldershot Town.

No details have been released about the length of contract, but manager Paul Cook said: “Ross will go in goal against Aldershot on Saturday and we’re delighted that he’s here to do that.

“Hopefully from there he will have a very confident start and we will see where it leads.

“Ross has got plenty of experience and has been at the club before, so it ticked so many boxes and we’re buzzing that he’s here."

Fitzsimons made one appearance for the Spireites in the curtailed 2019/2020 season after joining on loan from Notts County.

He was recalled by Notts after just one week, and he ironically saved a penalty against the Blues on his return.

The stopper has most recently been playing in Gibraltar for St Joseph’s, making his debut in a Europa Conference League match.

Fitzsimons was at Weymouth last season, winning the supporters’ and players’ player of the year awards, but left in May.

Before that, he signed for Stockport County for a small fee from Boston United after impressing with seven clean sheets in 16 appearances in the National League North.

Fitzsimons, who started his career at Crystal Palace, spent three years at Notts between 2017 and 2020, making more than 50 appearances in total in the Football League and National League.
