The 21-year-old has made a handful of senior appearances for the Owls since progessing through the academy ranks, including starting a 3-0 win against Newcastle United’s under-21s in the Papa John’s Trophy last month.

The Irish youngster can play centre-back and right-back and is right-footed.

Brennan made his Owls debut against Rochdale in the League Cup last season.

Chesterfield first-team coach Danny Webb, who was on media duties on Friday, was tight-lipped on the link, first reported by The Star.

“I am not sure, you would have to ask the manager about that, he deals with all the transfers,” Webb said.

"I know that the squad we have assembled at the moment is firing, I think you saw the other night the players who did not play at Dover stepped up to the plate.

"If anyone else was to come in I am sure they would be the right person on and off the field because the manager usually gets those things bang on with the type of character he recruits.

"Whoever would come in, whether near future or distant future, I am sure would be a great addition.”

Last week manager James Rowe said they might assess the squad at the ‘midway’ point of the season but the injury setback to defender Haydn Hollis may have forced his hand.

Rowe said last week: "In terms of anyone else new in, I am always looking to improve the team. If someone comes available that can improve us we will be interested but, having said that, I am very happy with the squad of players that I have got at the moment."

Brennan impressed Wednesday manager Darren Moore with his performance in the Papa Johns Trophy and he is highly thought of by everyone at the club.

“I thought Ciaran Brennan gave as clean a performance as you’d like in the back line out of all the players,” Moore told The Star. “He looked like he really enjoyed it tonight and I was pleased for him in terms of his attitude.”
