Cook was dismissed by the referee during the half-time interval of the 4-1 defeat at Rodney Parade last Friday.

He has until Monday to provide a response.

The boss took issue with a big call in contest at 2-0 when a home player appeared to stop a goal-bound shot with his hand. No action was taken. Cook was also unhappy with a 39th minute “goal” ruled out for offside.

The FA said in a statement: “Paul Cook has been charged with misconduct during Chesterfield’s EFL League Two match against Newport County on Friday 30 October.

“It’s is alleged that at half time, the manager’s behaviour was improper and/or he used abusive and/or insulting words towards a match official, leading to his dismissal.

“It’s further alleged that following his dismissal his behaviour was improper and/or he again used abusive and/or insulting words towards a match official.”
