Derbyshire weather: Met Office issues 18-hour heavy rain weather warning for Derbyshire – with flooding possible

Heavy rain may cause travel disruption and flooding across Derbyshire this weekend.

A yellow weather warning for rain will be in place across Derbyshire between 6am and midnight tomorrow (Saturday, November 29).

Rain, heavy at times, is expected to develop across southwest England on Friday night and spread toward northeast affecting a number of regions, including Derbyshire.

There is uncertainty in the corridor of heaviest rainfall across England and Wales, The Met Office said – but there is potential for 20-30 mm to fall fairly widely with 50 mm possible in places. Over high ground, there is a ‘low chance’ of 60-80 mm falling.

A yellow wind warning has been issued by the Met Office across the North West of England with strong winds and heavy rain set to cause chaos and travel disruption on Tuesday afternoon and overnight into Wednesday.

Strong winds may accompany the heavy rain at times, particularly across eastern parts of England on Saturday night.

The Met Office has warned: “ Expect spray and flooding on roads probably making journey times longer.

“Expect bus and train services probably affected with journey times taking longer, with a chance of cancellations where flooding occurs.

“There is a chance that homes and businesses could be flooded, causing damage to some buildings.

“There is a small chance that some communities will become cut off by flooded roads.

“There is a slight chance of power cuts and loss of other services to some homes and businesses.”

The following safety advice was issued: “Give yourself the best chance of avoiding delays by checking road conditions if driving, or bus and train timetables, amending your travel plans if necessary.

“People cope better with power cuts when they have prepared for them in advance. It’s easy to do; consider gathering torches and batteries, a mobile phone power pack and other essential items.

“Be prepared for weather warnings to change quickly: when a weather warning is issued, the Met Office recommends staying up to date with the weather forecast in your area.”
