River crash tragedy father named

A MAN who died yesterday after two cars containing members of the same family crashed into the River Wye just outside Buxton has been named as David Cox.

The 42-year-old was driving along a bridle path which runs near to the Monsal Trail, when his Toyota Aygo left the path and entered the River Wye.

His 11-year-old daughter, who was also in the car, managed to escape to safety.

Five minutes later, a Toyota Rav4 containing Mr Cox’s wife and nine-year-old son also left the path and crashed into the river. Mrs Cox and her son managed to escape to safety. Both parents were on the morning school run.

All four people were taken to Stepping Hill Hospital, Stockport, but Mr Cox sadly later died.

Police, fire, ambulance and mountain rescue teams all attended the scene with local residents and a police officer helping to rescue Mr Cox from his vehicle.

A fire crew and specialist water rescue team from Buxton attended and the road condition at the time of the accident was described as “poor.”
