Remembering Derbyshire Dales war heroes

Services will be held throughout the Dales this weekend to mark this year’s particularly poignant Remembrance Sunday – held 100 years after the start of World War One.

The Wirksworth branch of the Royal British Legion (RBL) will host a Remembrance Day service on Sunday at St Mary’s Church, Wirksworth, at 10.50am.

Prior to that there will be a parade led by the BMW Band starting at 10.25am and following the service there will be a march past and salute in the Market Place before proceeding to the Memorial Gardens for the Act of Remembrance.

There will be a two minute silence in the Memorial Gardens on Armistice Day – Tuesday, November 11 – at 11am.

In Darley Dale, Churches Together and Darley Town Council will host a parade and service at 2.40pm on Sunday.

The parade will start at 2.40pm on the Broadwalk with Darley Dale band, which will be followed by a service at Whitworth Park at 3pm. In Matlock, acts of remembrance will take place atPic Tor Memorial at 11am and Starkholmes War Memorial at 11.30am.

The Matlock branch of the RBL will parade from Edgefold Road at 2.45pm lead by Matlock band. A Remembrance Service will take place at 3pm at Hall Leys Park Head.

On Armistice Day there will be a gathering at the Park Head at 11am.

Matlock mayor David Barker said: “I think we ought to remember what people have done for us. Things would be much different if things had gone the other way.”

The Bakewell and District Royal British Legion will host a service with the Parochial Church Council at Bakewell Parish Church at 10.45am.

At 10.25am wreaths will be laid in Rutland Square and Bath Gardens.

The Cromford Branch of the Royal British Legion will host a service of remembrance in St Mary’s Church, Cromford, at 2pm, followed by the laying of wreaths at Scarthin War Memorials.

On Armistice Day children will lay crosses at the Scarthin memorials at 10.45am.
