Jade Ford, 26, has a daytime cake making business and also works night shifts answering 111 health service calls.

Although she also has two boys, aged three and four, Jade has somehow found time to make extra cakes for nurses and paramedic teams at Chesterfield Royal Hospital.

And she has also made use of her partner’s 3D printer to make more than 600 ear savers for hospital, ambulance and surgery teams using surgical masks – all free of charge.

Despite having her own wedding cancelled because of the restrictions imposed during lockdown, Jade says she was determined to do her bit and help out.

Jade said: “I have always been one for giving and trying to help others where I can, be that buying them some shopping when they are struggling to make ends meet or just being there to talk to. And of course there is always cake.

“When this virus really started to hit in the UK I saw the huge effects it was having on everyone, especially front line staff, I myself felt a lot of the strains being part of the NHS and I’m sure as you will have seen on the news how many people have taken their lives from this.

“I strongly believe one act of random kindness can massively change someone’s day and make all of the difference.”

Jade’s cake business is called Jade’s Delights, and in April she began taking her baked treats to the Royal for staff during the peak of the crisis.

“I saw many staff were struggling wearing the surgical masks for extended periods of time as the elastics were cutting into their ears,” Jade said.

“I thought how could I help further? Ear savers stop the elastic resting on the back of the ears so I decided to try to learn how to use my partner’s 3D printer to produce some.

“After a few attempts and some tweaking, more than 600 have been donated through requests.”
