The play focuses on Henry VIII’s notorious second wife and how she radically altered the state of the Church to help grant the king’s divorce from Katherine of Aragon.

Written by Howard Brenton, the play was originally commissioned for Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre on London’s South Bank,

Nicky Beards, who is directing Hasland’s production, said: “It’s a true celebration of a great English queen. The play is a rollercoaster ride between Anne’s rise to queen and fall from power and seventy years later, when King James comes to power and discovers Anne’s coronation dress in an old chest. We cross between the two time periods to see how Anne affects the future. It’s witty and vivid and a total joy to put on the stage.

“We have beautiful costumes and the cast of talented actors have been working tirelessly, both with me and professional actor Andrew Jarvis, to recreate some well-known historical characters.

“It’s a must for any fans of the exciting Tudor and Jacobean eras and for anyone who loves a well-told yarn!”

Anne Boleyn runs at The Playhouse on Storforth Lane in Hasland from April 3 to 8. Tickets £8.50, call the box office on 01246 272271, or visit www.haslandtheatrecompany.co.uk
