Liam's marathon effort at Derby Velodrome to raise money for charity

He’s taken on Mount Snowdon and a skydive out of a plane, and this weekend, Liam Blaney, who is living with motor neurone disease (MND), will take part in a 26-mile marathon in his wheelchair at Derby Velodrome.

Liam, who was diagnosed with MND in December 2021, is taking part in the event alongside his family and friends who will push him around the velodrome 170 times to complete the 26-mile marathon.

Afterwards, Liam and his team will take part in an extra mile event at Pride Park, home of Derby County FC.

Liam, who was born in Derby, explained: “I was teaching karate at the time of my diagnosis and had been experiencing problems for some time. My family encouraged me to go to the doctors and within a few days I had been given a terminal diagnosis.

“I have been lucky in many ways. I still have my voice and I can still swallow, although my breathing is starting to be affected now. It’s my legs, ankles, knees and hips and my arms too.

“I’ve always wanted to take part in a marathon and this will be the last in my trilogy of fundraising. In 2022 I was pushed up Mount Snowdon and last year I did a skydive.

“But I want to focus on what I can do and it's all about raising as much money and awareness as I possibly can.”

The event will take place at Derby Velodrome between 9am and 4pm on Sunday, August 11 and supporters are welcome to go along and show their support.
