Chesterfield MP Toby Perkins has coronavirus

The Labour MP was diagnosed with Covid-19 on Christmas Eve.

He said: “I have been pretty ill all over Christmas and continue to have great difficulty breathing if I attempt to exert any sort of effort.

“I know many have had it and had no adverse effects but I wouldn’t wish how I’m feeling on anyone.”

Mr Perkins revealed the news on Twitter, prompting a flood of well-wishes.

Conservative MP Nadhim Zahawi, who is overseeing the roll out of the Covid vaccine in England, said: “Toby, I am so sorry to hear that. Wishing you a speedy and full recovery.”

According to the latest available data, there were 188 cases of Covid-19 in Chesterfield between December 18 and December 24, up 15 compared with the previous week.

The infection rate for the latest period was 179 cases per 100,000 people. The average area in England had 267.
