He said of his Leeds Festival appearance: “I did it three times in a row. It’s fantastic man. It can be a bit nerve-racking. But it’s a great festival. For what I want to do it’s the best thing in the world.

“Making records and playing live is two very different things - you can tour a lot, it becomes routine and you can get tension from all the people you are travelling with.

“But on the other hand you don’t want to be in a studio too long. You can shut yourself away too long. It’s good to moderate the two.”

Jake, who sang hits from his self-titled debut album and latest offering, Shangri La, added: “I’ve got a tour in October. Next year I plan to travel back to Tennessee and Mississippi and try to let some songs write themselves.

“I can be inspired by many things, a book, piece of art or hearing someone say a phrase in the street.

In advice for budding musicians he said: “The most important thing is great, great songs that everyone remembers.

“If you write a song that conmnects with people, that they can relate to, that’s the most important thing about doing this,

“I don’t want to bombard people with too much music - some people haven’t even heard my first album yet, I’m happy to put out a record after record but I’ve got to make sure they are good records.”
