Catch Bank Holiday weekend exhibition

Ashover-based ceramicist Sue Gorman (pictured) will join 26 Peak District Artisans at a Spring Arts Weekend in place of the annual Derbyshire Open Arts event this week.

The exhibition will take place over May Bank Holiday weekend at the Whitworth Centre, Darley Dale, showcasing the work of a wide-ranging selection of artists, designer-makers and craftspeople from throughout the region.

Peak District Artisan member, Brian Robinson, who is co-organising the event with his wife Maggie, also a PDA member, said: “As a group, we are delighted to be once again exhibiting at this beautiful Victorian grade two building.

“The exhibition is a wonderful opportunity to showcase some of the artistic talent the group has to offer, and I’m sure visitors will be interested to meet the members whilst they browse and buy.”

The exhibition runs Saturday, May 23, to Monday, May 25, from 10am – 5pm, (4.30pm Mon). Admission is free.

n Popular Irish singer Frank McCaffrey is visiting Uppertown Social Centre, near Ashover, again on May 23, for the latest in his hugely popular visits to the venue.

Frank has toured throughout Ireland as well as England, Europe and America. He still lives in his home town of Westport in County Mayo.

He started his musical career at an early age and formed his first band with some friends while still at school. When he left school he joined a local band The Beatminstrels‚ and then later joined The Frielmen.

In 1970, he turned professional and began playing bass guitar in Margo and the Country Folk‚ (Daniel O’Donnell’s sister). Five years later he left to form his own band‚ Band of Gold.

In 1983, Frank made the decision to become a solo artist and was signed to Ritz records.

Frank’s latest recording is You’re the World is an old Bellamy Brothers song. The Bellamy Brothers are most famous for hit song If I Said You Had A Beautiful Body Would You Hold It Against Me.
