The Vehicle Nuisance Protection Order came into operation on 21 September 2026 and will remain in place for three years. It follows a public consultation held between 24 August and 7 September 2026, which received 99 responses. Of those who responded, 94% supported renewing the Order, 92% said they had experienced; witnessed or been affected by antisocial vehicle use during the previous 12 months.

The Order applies to publicly accessible land across the district and prohibits people from taking part in, or being a spectator of, car cruising events involving antisocial activities.

 These include:

  • Performing vehicle stunts such as drifting, wheel spinning and handbrake turns

  • Speeding or racing in a way that causes a danger or risk of injury

  • Causing an obstruction on the highway, including driving in convoy

  • Causing a nuisance through loud music or other vehicle noise

  • Revving engines in a way that causes a nuisance

  • Promoting or organising car cruising events

  • Sounding vehicle horns inappropriately in a way that causes a nuisance.

Councillor Nigel Barker, Leader of North East Derbyshire District Council, said: “The strong level of support from residents shows how important this issue is. Renewing this Order will help us continue addressing antisocial vehicle use across the district.”

Anyone who fails to comply with the Order could commit a criminal offence and may be issued with a Fixed Penalty Notice or, following conviction, receive a fine not exceeding level 3 on the standard scale.

The authority said that the consultation highlighted speeding and dangerous driving, off-road motorcycles, e-bikes and quad bikes, vehicle noise and public safety as key concerns among respondents.
