Why Chesterfield would benefit if Wigan Athletic sell Sam Morsy

The midfielder was sold to the Lancashire club in January 2016 and the Blues negotiated a 10 per cent sell-on clause which could land them some much-needed funds as long as he is sold for more than £200,000 which is what the Latics paid for him.

The Egypt international, whose contract expires in 2021, is likely to command a fee of between £1m and £2m.

Morsy has been rumoured with a move to Crystal Palace and Brighton recently after Wigan plunged into administration.

A number of the Championship club’s players are being linked with moves away including striker Kieffer Moore who has been the subject of a £2.5m from Queens Park Rangers.

If Morsy does move it would be the second windfall for Chesterfield in recent weeks. Liam Cooper’s promotion with Leeds United will bag the Spireites around £150,000 as part of the terms of the transfer that took him to Elland Road in 2014 for £600,000 plus add-ons.

If the Chesterfield FC Community Trust complete a takeover of the club this week then they could be in position to benefit from the Cooper money and any funds from a potential Morsy move.

Both sides of the takeover are hopeful the deal will be finalised by August 1.

In a statement released on Saturday, Spireites company secretary, Ashley Carson, said that “everything is going to plan.”

"The lawyers are now distributing the documents ready for signing for the transfer of shares,” he added.
