Chesterfield have lost four of their opening five league games and are third bottom of the National League.

When asked by the DT if the job is bigger than what he initially thought, Pemberton said: “No, it is exactly what I thought it would be.”

“Be better when we have got possession of the ball, be better in 1v1 situations, be better with crosses where we have got to pick up, and don’t shortcut anything. If you shortcut anything, you can bet your life at this moment in time we will get punished for it.”

The Blues boss has been left frustrated at his team’s poor defending in key moments, as well as some debatable refereeing decisions, including two goals being ruled out against Wealdstone which he felt should have counted having watched them back.

“The frustration is not coming just from the games, the frustration is coming from the whole situation that we have encountered from the start,” he told the DT. "You try to put things in place but it is almost like there is always something that seems to be a little barrier, or catch us out, or trips us up, but I don’t want to make any excuses about it. The pre-season is gone now, we are now five games into the season.

“Against Wealdstone we had a three-minute spell where we conceded two goals and then after that I thought we were all right. The wonder strike was one of those things, it can go anywhere and it goes in the top corner. That’s what happens when things aren’t quite going for you. We have got to keep going, keep plugging away and keep working hard.”

Chesterfield are next in action on Saturday away at Yeovil Town (3pm KO) who have not win any of their opening five matches, but have only lost one after recording four draws. The Glovers drew 3-3 with Dover Athletic last weekend in the FA Cup before winning 7-6 on penalties.
