'We were cut-throat' - Chesterfield manager James Rowe 'proud' as Spireites thrash Barnet and Akwasi Asante scores hat-trick

James Rowe was 'proud' of Chesterfield's performance as they thrashed Barnet 6-0.

Scott Boden, Haydn Hollis and Jak McCourt got the other goals as the Spireites ran riot at the Technique Stadium.

Rowe remains unbeaten as Blues manager with three wins and a draw from four games in charge.

“We were cut-throat today and that is what we wanted to be,” Rowe said.

“It was a close game in the first half, we probably edged it, in the second half we blew them away. We were ruthless.

“The way they have taken the game plan onto the pitch I can’t ask any more.

“Going forward, the second goal, you could watch that at any level. It is an outstanding goal to get in round the back on a diagonal and cut it back for Scott to score so I am really pleased and more to come hopefully.

“I am really proud of them. The last goal sums it up that Jak has run 60-yards and scored from two yards from the goal-line. That is what we want with and without the ball. Asante’s hat-trick goal was from a 50-yard sprint.

“The game plan was movement, get down the sides of them, Whelan coming in as a ‘10’ and running on and it worked and we got rewards.

“I don’t know what’s happened before but all I see is winners in there, hungry players and a real togetherness.

“I am delighted but I just don’t want to get too carried away because we are only four games in.”

Asante rounded off his hat-trick with a superb solo goal for his fourth in a Town shirt already.

Rowe said: “Three different goals, three different types of finishes, and he deserved the hat-trick ball at the end of the game.”

As well as his goal, the impressive McCourt played a defence-splitting pass for Asante’s opener and swung in the corner for Hollis’ strike.

Rowe said that McCourt was ‘outstanding’ and was his man of the match.

On whether he will look to extend McCourt’s month-to-month contract, Rowe said: “Possibly. Obviously he is only halfway through that at the moment. We have to review that but with performance like that, probably yeah. We need to get that done.”
