The visitors started brightly and had two good chances through Joe Sbarra and Cameron Archer but failed to take advantage and they were made to pay when Tom Whelan struck inside the area just before half-time which turned out to be the winner.

Town finished the game with 10-men when George Carline was shown a second yellow card but they hung on for all three points in the first game of 2021.

Shan said: “We have got to be ruthless. We have got to better in both boxes.

“I think we arguably had the best two clear-cut chances in the opening 20 minutes and I think if we convert both those chances it is a different game.

“They got the ball in and around our box quite frequently, we have got to be better at stopping it at source.

“I think against a big physical presence in Tom Denton we actually dealt with that quite well.

“But we have got to be ruthless in both boxes. We didn’t defend our 18-yard box well enough in the first half.

“I thought there was a response second half, I thought we upped our intensity

“We have to be more clinical and then the game is different.”

When asked if Chesterfield coped with the snowy conditions better than his side, Shan added: “I wouldn’t say so, no, because in the first 15-20 minutes we could have been 2-0 up.”
