Nothing was going to stop Martin Allen from cheering on his wife's charitable efforts for a cause very close to his heart.

The Chesterfield boss has brought the kick-off for the friendly at Nuneaton on 21st July forward to 2pm so he can race south to see wife Lisa plunge into the Thames.

She’s tackling the Club to Pub swim – a 1.5k swim from Henley Rowing Club to the Angel on the Bridge for a charity that means a lot to Martin.

“Both of my parents died pretty young from cancer and she often does local runs to raise money for Cancer Research,” he said.

“A friend of her’s asked if she wanted to do a swim in the river and very bravely she agreed to do it.

“I’m not missing my wife doing that.”

He’s in no doubt that she’ll succeed.

“She’s brave, she’s got courage and guts, all the traits you need to be a champion,” Allen added.

“We’ve had a lot of Chesterfield fans already sponsoring her quite a lot of money and we can’t thank them enough.”

Lisa has so far more than doubled her £500 sponsorship target.

Kind hearted Spireites have been getting involved with the fundraising, including Town fan Antony Catton who said: “Lost my partner of 11 years to cancer three years ago so this cause means an awful lot to me.”
