Winning 2-1 with three minutes remaining, the Spireites conceded two headed goals to Ruben Rodrigues and Kyle Wootton to fall to their seventh defeat in nine matches to leave them third bottom of the National League.

It was a huge shame because Town had come from behind to lead with goals from Jonathan Smith and Tom Denton cancelling out Enzio Boldewijn’s opener.

“It is soul-destroying,” Dungworth said.

“Generally it was a good performance but obviously the game lasts for 93 minutes and we failed to go the distance by conceding three goals today from set-pieces which is criminal really.

People have not done their jobs. We have practiced free-kicks - for and against - the lads get lots of information but can’t carry things out to the final whistle.

“It is a lack of professionalism, let’s be honest. They can’t see a game out.

“It is obviously a lack of concentration and a lack of communication.

“We have just switched off and we have paid the price again.”

When asked by the DT if there is enough quality in the team, Dungworth said: “I think in certain areas we do need different qualities. Yeah, we need to improve the team, that is without question. I don't know how long you can go with the same group. You can only go so long I suppose.”

Dungworth said the current group of players have ‘definitely’ had enough chances now, but disagreed with the suggestion that it is a big job for a new manager.

He told the DT: “I think it is only two or three key positions that we need. You have seen today the lads played well against a good team. Do we need more experience in certain positions? Do we need players who are more streetwise than the ones we have got?”

Dungworth opted not to make any substitutes during the game. On why that was, he added: “The thinking behind it was I thought the lads who were on the pitch were doing a job. I didn’t want to make a change for the sake of making a change. I thought we were doing alright.”
