The 24-year-old left-back has signed a contract until the end of the 2022 season, we understand.

Chester said the fee could rise depending on further add-ons relating to future on-field successes across the next two seasons.

He agreed personal terms and passed a medical on Monday.

Taylor becomes James Rowe’s fifth signing since being appointed manager less than two weeks ago.

“I’ve heard a lot about the club and the manager and I feel that I will fit right into the manager’s plans so I’m delighted to be here,” Taylor said.

“I like to believe that I’m a very attacking full-back so I like to get up the pitch and chip in with a few goals and assists, but first and foremost, defensive work is my main priority.”

Rowe said: “Joel is someone I have followed for a while now and he is a player that I know fits in physically and technically with how we want to play here.

“I would like to thank Bernard Morley and Anthony Johnson for their co-operation on reaching an agreement.

“I am confident our supporters will enjoy watching Joel in a Chesterfield shirt over the coming months and seasons.”

Chester’s joint manager, Anthony Johnson, said: “We’re obviously disappointed to lose Joel at an important stage of the season.

“He is a player we’ve invested a lot of time in, in terms of scouting and coaching, but we believe it’s probably the right time and the best deal in the interests of all parties.

“It was made aware to us that there was interest in him from Chesterfield late last week and when we asked him what his thoughts on it were, he told us he wanted to leave Chester and sign for them.”

Taylor will link-up again with his former Chester team-mate and good friend Akwasi Asante, 28.

He was voted Chester’s Player of the Year award in 2019/20 and was named in the National League North team of the season after making 38 appearances.

Taylor was a fans’ favourite at the Deva Stadium for his high-energy and pacey displays going forward as well as his defensive ability.
