The Spireites crashed to 3-2 defeat at Altrincham on Tuesday night and are now third bottom of the National League after losing six of their opening eight games.

Speaking after the defeat to Altrincham, Pemberton said: “I am disappointed with the result. We had enough chances to win the game but that is the way it has gone for us.

“I am disappointed full stop with what is happening but I have to take full responsibility. It is down to me, it has not been good enough, I accept that.

“We have won two games and we have not been good enough and I am the manager so I have to take full responsibility for it and I will.

“We have got to improve. I have to sit down and think about where it is going.

“I am responsible for it. The buck stops with me and I have to take whatever criticism I am going to get which is understandable.

“I am the one who puts them out there, I am the one who picks them, so I have to take responsibility for it.”

Chesterfield went ahead through Scott Boden’s 13th minute header, but the hosts equalised after half an hour when Fisayo Adarabioyo took advantage of a defensive mistake.

Josh Hancock put the hosts ahead from the penalty spot in the second half, but Jordan Cropper equalised a minute later from distance.

But it was late heartbreak for the Spireites again when Hancock grabbed the winner in the 89th minute.

“We are working hard, I think you can see that, we have created enough chances but we have not been good enough and it is a poor result,” Pemberton said.

When asked if the players are hurting enough, he added: “They don’t like losing that is for sure but it is a difficult one. It is something that has been part of this group for a little while and it is very difficult to take the shackles off it.

"It is a game that we could have quite easy been two or three up, but we haven’t and again it is defensive frailties that have let us down.”
