The 33-year-old was signed by former manager John Pemberton in August as a replacement for Shwan Jalal, who departed in the summer.

Letheren made 16 appearances for Town this season, recording seven clean sheets, including five in a row from December to January.

His last game for the Blues was the late defeat to Solihull Moors in January 2, in which his mistake cost Chesterfield a point.

Letheren posted on Twitter: “I have cancelled my @ChesterfieldFC contract today by mutual consent. A opportunity has come up that I feel is too good to turn down. I would like to wish the lads all the best for rest of season.”

Confirming his departure, the Spireites said in a statement: "Keeper Kyle Letheren’s departure from the club by mutual consent has been confirmed.

"Letheren, who joined the Spireites last August, leaves following the arrival of Adam Przybek and Grant Smith earlier this week.

“The club would like to thank Kyle for his contribution and wish him all the very best for the future.”

Manager James Rowe has brought in two new goalkeepers in Smith, 27, and Przyebk, 20, in the last week.

Chesterfield also have stoppers Luke Coddington, 25, and youngster Dylan Wharton, 18, on their books.

Smith was a free agent after leaving Wealdstone in November and Przybek has joined on loan from Ipswich Town until the end of the season.

Przybek made his debut in the win against Wrexham on Saturday after being given the number one shirt.
