Mr Gaunt, 81, was chairman from October 1979 to June 1983 after joining the board in 1971.

While he was in charge the Spireites beat Rangers to win the Anglo-Scottish Cup in 1981 and narrowly missed out on promotion to the second tier.

A club statement read: “During his tenure, fans saw some of the best football witnessed at Saltergate with players like Alan Birch, Danny Wilson and Phil Bonnyman all brought in. He was chairman when Chesterfield signed three players on transfer deadline day and were the biggest spenders in England.”

Mr Gaunt, a qualified quantity surveyor, also held the position of president of Rotary Club of Chesterfield and was recognised for 50 years of service in January.

He leaves behind wife Jackie, along with two sons and two daughters.

“Our sincere condolences are extended to Ian's family and friends,” the club added.
