Five big talking points from Chesterfield's thumping FA Cup defeat to Stockport County in replayed tie

Chesterfield crashed out of the FA Cup with a 4-0 defeat in the replayed fourth qualifying round tie against Stockport County at Edgeley Park. Here are Liam Norcliffe’s five big talking points from the game...

Nathan Tyson’s injury

A worry about having to replay this game was suffering injuries and that is exactly what happened. Tyson hobbled off after 15 minutes with what looked like a foot problem. It was a huge blow to Town’s game plan and they changed formation from 3-4-3 to 3-5-2 for the remainder of the first half as Jonathan Smith came on in his place. The bigger picture, of course, is how long he is going to be out for. There was no post-match interview with John Pemberton so we will have to wait until next week before we find out the latest.

Out of pocket

The administrative error that caused the replay has not only cost Chesterfield on the field but off it too. They would have collected £9,375 for winning the original tie on October 24 and a further £3,125 just for playing in the first round. Prize money for beating Rochdale on Saturday would have seen them pocket £22,629. They will now receive nothing. A very expensive mistake.

How damaging could this be?

The good feeling of the win at Yeovil seems a long time ago now and Chesterfield will go into the next game against Maidenhead on November 14 on the back of this thumping loss. The announcement about this replay must have been disheartening for the squad knowing that their big efforts in the original tie were all for nothing. Whereas County would have been buzzing at a second chance and they got off to a perfect start through Richard Bennett’s fourth minute acrobatic finish. Alex Reid finished one-on-one 10 minutes before half-time for 2-0 and then John Rooney scored two penalties after the break. The first penalty decision for handball against Tom Denton caught everyone by surprise and seemed very harsh. I didn’t think it was a 4-0 scoreline type of game and Town kept plugging away but it was a night to forget overall. Let’s hope they can brush it off quickly.

Could it have been different?

At 1-0 down Chesterfield had a glorious chance to equalise midway through the first half but it fell to the wrong man in David Buchanan six or seven yards out on his weaker right foot with just County goalkeeper Ben Hinchliffe to beat. Buchs scuffed his effort and the ball drifted inches wide of the post. If that had gone in it could have been a completely different game but it was not to be. It turned out to be Chesterfield’s only major chance of the night.

Let’s never mention Stockport again…

It was a problem with Jordan Cropper’s registration that caused this match to be replayed and he actually suffered a muscle injury in the first game and he will be out for at least a couple of weeks. To make matters worse, in the same game Josef Yarney received a three-match retrospective ban for a violent conduct incident and despite the fixture having to be replayed, his suspension still stands. A disastrous tie all round.
