Blistering pace and fire in the belly: Why Nathan Tyson is a shrewd signing for Chesterfield

The Spireites are finally up and running in the transfer market with the signing of Nathan Tyson - and I think it’s a sensible move.

The experienced striker showed exactly what he can do with three goals and two assists in six starts during a short loan spell last season.

He is 38 but he has kept himself in great shape and is a lot fitter than some players 10 years younger than him.

I believe it is a one-year deal for Tyson which makes sense for both parties and they can sit down and discuss the next move after that. The days of Chesterfield handing out lucrative three-year contracts to players are over that is for sure.

He definitely still has something to offer with his blistering pace - a quality the Blues do not have - and as long as he can stay clear of injuries then I would back him to score goals at this level.

It was not just his goals and pace that impressed me last season, his all-round play and game management shone through which proved vital in the relegation scraps against Ebbsfleet United and Chorley.

Another positive is that he is a very likeable person and spoke intelligently after scoring his 23-minute hat-trick against Ebbsfleet. He wants to continue to play until he is 40 and he definitely still has a big desire and fire in the belly to want to win.

Unlike some players who have put on the Town shirt in recent years, Tyson is not coming here just for one last contract and John Pemberton would certainly not let that happen either.

Perhaps he might want to prove a few people at Notts wrong too after being released?

The Spireites players are due back at the end of this week for some fitness tests before full pre-season gets underway on Monday.

The squad is looking a bit threadbare so the re-signing of a couple of players from last season as well as a few new additions would be welcome but it is about being patient and if Pemberton does not feel the right players are available at the moment then there is no point bringing them in.
