New bespoke furniture and re-upholstering in Derbyshire: Sofas, chairs, beds, and bench seating

From re-upholstering vintage and antique furniture, to designing, making and fitting bespoke seating in businesses, bars and bedrooms, or simply fashioning you a fabulous footstool, Young & Sons Furniture have it covered.
As well as fulfilling commissions from a broad range of customers looking for distinctive new furniture designs or wanting to give their existing ones a new lease of life, Young & Sons also design and build their own range including sofas, chairs and beds. And they work with some big names in hospitality and business to create beautiful and practical seating to fit any brief.

And with over 600 fabric samples to choose from there will be no problem finding something to suit your style and taste, and because they take care of everything from measuring to making and delivering, in consultation with you, you can be sure your chosen furniture will look good, feel great and fit into your home perfectly.
Young & Sons Furniture may be relatively new in the Alfreton area, but its three directors, twins Kyle and Callum Young and Troy McCoy have over half a century of expertise between them in furniture making.
We caught up with them to find out more about what they offer.
Who do you make furniture for?
We work with domestic customers, from recovering sofas to creating one-off designs for specific areas or needs; from bespoke beds to benches. Young & Sons also carry out contract fittings, working with some of the largest companies in the hospitality sector including hotels and bars and they make their own range of upholstered furniture including beds, settees and chairs.
What are the advantages of using a small firm like yourselves?
Every item is going to be exactly what you want, in a style and size to suit you and your home, and will be made by expert craftsmen, explains managing director Callum.
“You might see a sofa at a High Street supplier, but it might not be quite as long or as deep as you want, or in the right colour, but we can take that design and create the furniture exactly how you want it,” he said. Then, of course there are the unique pieces of furniture, or unusual commissions that only a bespoke design and manufacturing company could offer.
There’s the friendly, personal and professional service, the free advice, the home visits, and the ability to turn an idea in your head into reality in your home! Above all Young & Sons have a reputation they want to uphold and a passion for their profession – they might even make you a brew!
Young & Sons will take care of everything – measuring not only the space in your room to ensure a good fit, but checking how the furniture is going to get in. Want that big sofa but can’t get it through the door? Live in a block of flats? Don’t want to take your windows out to get your furniture in? No worries. Young & Sons will talk you through the options, and could come up with a fresh idea or could make a modular version of it and put it together in situ.
On top of all that you will be dealing in person with the directors themselves who will oversee the project from start to finish.

It sounds expensive – could I afford it?
Nothing is imported and everything is made to order in their workshop space in Riddings, whether that’s a bespoke commission or one of their own range. Troy said they believed in ‘affordable luxury’. Clients are paying for quality and craftsmanship but their prices, he said, are comparable to high-street stockists.
Every penny you spend will be supporting a local company, local suppliers and local employees who are employed to make and deliver the orders. And of course, there are different fabrics, fillings and materials so a design can be tailored to different budgets.
“If you support a small, independent business like this, you are supporting local suppliers, putting money back into the local area,” explains Callum, who works across the business in both production and sales.

Tell us about some of the more unusual projects you’ve done?
“We re-upholstered a settee which had been in four generations of the same family,” said Troy. “The first owner was the great aunt, who had had it at the time of the First World War.”
He said they had had a wide variety of requests, designing and building seating for everything from walk-in wardrobes to private swimming pools.
One of the teams' favourite pieces came from Royal Marine who wanted a chair re-upholstered in his uniform, Callum told us “it was an honour to have undertaken such a special commission”.

Why re-upholster and what’s the advantage?
“Affordability and sustainability,” Troy says. Whether it’s a family heirloom, an upcycle of a vintage piece or just your favourite sofa which needs some love, re-upholstering is a cost-effective and environmentally beneficial option.
He said they loved giving furniture a new lease of life, and that it wasn’t just older clients who wanted the service – generations that were used to things lasting a ‘lifetime’ if you looked after them – but younger generations too. And it’s not just antique pieces, but more modern, mass-produced furniture which, with a little TLC, could last much longer.
“Once a sofa starts to sag or wear, people think they need to throw it away, but if we can prevent that it helps the eco-system and will stop it going into landfill,” Troy explained.
What’s trending for 2025?
Kyle is king of design at Young & Sons. A former design and development upholsterer at a major manufacturer , he has brought his know-how and keen eye to the business.
“Trends are now changing from greys and the style is moving to creams and browns,” he said. This neutral pallet is given a pop of colour or some pattern with accessories like scatter cushions. Young & Sons can make all soft furnishings including cushions and arm covers, so you can give your whole room a fresh look.
Do you have a showroom?
Whilst it’s not a showroom, clients are welcome to come along to take a look round and browse the fabrics for themselves at the Riddings workshop. And here you can meet the staff, the three directors work full time from here and there’s another seamstress who works full time from home. But the team mainly go out to see clients in their own home or business.
Where do you start, and what if I’m not sure what I want?
The website is a good place to start but the best thing is to make an appointment for one of the guys to visit and speak to you about what you’re thinking of. Then leave it to the experts, they can advise and help you pick out fabrics, finishes and fillings, measure and make your furniture and deliver it to your door.
They believe the personal service is best. “You may see something on the internet but when you get that fabric home and see it in natural light in your house, and with your existing décor it can look quite different,” says Troy.
