Tragedy as climber dies after ‘sizable fall’ in Peak District

A climber has died after falling from a limestone crag in Derbyshire.

Edale Mountain Rescue Team (EMRT) was called to the incident at Stoney Middleton at 6.45pm on Tuesday.

An EMRT spokesperson said: “We were alerted by East Midlands Ambulance Service (EMAS) to reports of a fallen climber.

“The team deployed 18 personnel plus three vehicles and, working alongside EMAS doctors, ambulance crews and police, rapidly located the individual at the bottom of the crags above the A623.

“Tragically and despite the best efforts of all the agencies involved the climber had sustained fatal injuries from a sizable fall.

“Team members then set about the difficult task of extracting the individual from an unstable location and, using rope system, lowering them down to the road.

“This task was made more challenging due to the necessary requirements for all personnel to be wearing Covid-19 PPE and observing the associated protocols.”

EMRT sent its condolences to the climber’s loved ones.
