Rubbish service pay-out agreed

Rubbish contractors Serco have agreed to pay £75,000 back to Dales taxpayers in an effort to compensate for the disastrous start to their
 service last Autumn.

Serco pledged the cash after a series of negotiations with Derbyshire Dales District Council – which was forced to spend a large, but unspecified, amount of money handling complaints and delivering containers when bins were left unemptied.

But Cllr Colin Swindell, who was extremely vocal in the height of the fiasco, is still keen to find out if taxpayers really are getting value for money.

Cllr Swindell, who represents Winster and South Darley residents, said: “It is great that the council officers have worked hard to get this money back.

“However, I am concerned that this money will not compensate the damage done to the district council’s reputation, and indeed all the taxpayers who didn’t have their bins emptied for weeks on end.”
