In 1977, Peter Howse was the Chief Inspector of the Buxton South Sub-division of Derbyshire Police, when Billy Hughes escaped from custody. Hughes had stabbed two prison officers in the neck, before killing four members of the same family in Eastmoor near Chesterfield. After taking another member of the same family hostage, he headed north towards Manchester.
