Chesterfield MP 'so happy' after Sir Keir Starmer announced as new Labour Party leader

Chesterfield MP Toby Perkins says he is ‘so happy’ after it was announced Sir Keir Starmer is to be the new leader of the Labour Party.

Mr Perkins has been a vocal supporter of Sir Keir’s campaign, describing him as ‘fiercely intelligent, passionate and forensic’ with a career prior to Westminster which gives him ‘real world experience’.

Mr Perkins tweeted this morning: “So,so happy that @UKLabour members have so overwhelmingly backed@Keir_Starmer to re-unite our party. His acceptance speech showed exactly why he is right person for the job.”

He was elected leader this morning after winning 56.2 per cent of the vote of Labour Party members to defeat Rebecca Long-Bailey (27.6 per cent) and Lisa Nandy (16.2 per cent).

In his acceptance speech, he said that ‘in times like this, we need good government - a government that saves lives and protects our country’.
