Tributes to 'well-known and liked' Sheffield man after tragic death in Peak District 'flying incident'

Former IT manager Tim Ogden, 53, of Rushdale Avenue, Sheffield, died near Mam Tor, Castleton, on August 14.

Known as ‘Oggy’, he was a popular member of the Derbyshire Soaring Club (DSC) paragliding group, with fellow enthusiasts of the sport leading the tributes this week.

"It is with great sadness that the DSC committee must share news of the passing of one of our members, Tim Ogden,” the club’s committee said in a statement.

“Tim ‘Oggy’ was well-known and liked in the club and the news of this tragic flying incident will come as a shock to all.

“With his family and those closest to him notified, we urge our members to consider those he was dear to, and respectfully refrain from undue speculation on the incident whether publicly or privately.

“All official procedures are underway, and any relevant details and outcomes will be duly communicated to our members, but now is the time for remembrance, and humanity.”

The statement added that club members ‘must support one another, reach out to those around you to share memories, good thoughts, and be there for each other’ at a difficult time.

“The committee is here in both official capacity and also as a friendly ear to any who wishes to speak to us, however the news of Tim's passing is affecting you,” the committee added on its website.

“A sad loss for the flying community, our collective thoughts are with his family and friends.”

Fellow club member Chris Dervin described him ‘as a really nice bloke’.

Suzanne Berzins posted on the DSC Facebook page: “Such sad news, our sport can be so painful. Another good one taken too early. Thoughts are with Tim's family and friends.”

Geoff Moses said he ‘was always welcomed with a smile from Tim’, and passed on his condolences to Tim’s family and many friends.

Mr Ogden’s inquest was opened on Friday, August 21 at Chesterfield coroners’ court.

The provisional cause of death, following a post-mortem, is chest injuries.

Derbyshire assistant coroner Emma Serrano adjourned the inquest to a future date.
