Kind-hearted teenagers bring joy to Chesterfield Royal Hospital

“We couldn’t be prouder of the team for seeing a need in their community and taking it upon themselves to make a real difference.”

Four teenagers, who attend Outwood Academy in Newbold, have dedicated their free time to help children receiving care and treatment at Royal Chesterfield Hospital.

Orla Smith, Harriet Hart, Lola Flowers and Soraya Churm, all aged 13, have raised over £1,000 for the Nightingale paediatric inpatient ward at the hospital.

The 13-year-old girls held a stall at BrimFest including a teddy tombola, and a book sale which raised an incredible £160 as well as a driveway stall which raised over £200 and sold books online.

The girls have also set up a successful Go Fund Me page and a Facebook page to support their fundraising efforts.

Over £1,000 raised has helped to buy gifts for children receiving treatment at the hospital.

Last week the teenagers brought smiles to little patients’ faces when they visited Nightingale Ward with the presents.

Tracy Barker, Lead Nurse for Paediatrics said: “This is incredible – well done and thank you.

“What an achievement for this group of young people who have shown compassion and empathy and have spent their holidays thinking of others. I know that the ward and families will be incredibly grateful for these gifts and their efforts will put a smile on a lot of faces here.

“You should be very proud.”

The girls said: “After hearing of children who may be in hospital, we wanted to help them by raising money to buy things that may keep them entertained and make the days go faster.

“We wanted to help put smiles on their faces.

“We’d like to thank everyone from our community who helped us do this and who supported us through our various events and pages. Thank you.”

David Booker, Assistant Principal at Outwood Academy Newbold , added: “We couldn’t be prouder of the team for seeing a need in their community and taking it upon themselves to make a real difference.

“Outwood Out There is all about empowering young people to be brave, take action and create positive change, and Orla, Harriet, Lola and Soraya have shown exactly what that looks like.

“Their commitment, initiative and compassion are a fantastic example of the impact young people can have when they believe they can make a difference.

“We hope their story inspires others to get out there and do the same.”
