The £19.9million scheme is breathing new life into the northern entrance of Chesterfield town centre.

The development has already seen a new multi-storey car park open at Saltergate – and the first and second floors of the town’s old Co-op department store have been transformed into a Premier Inn hotel.

Developers are still in talks with firms interested in moving to units in the basement and ground floor of the prominent property on Elder Way.

Mark Hill, commercial property director at Jomast Developments, said there had been considerable interest from businesses in Elder Way since they acquired and converted the building.

He added: “Despite Covid, we are progressing discussions with interested tenants for the units at Elder Way.

“Chesterfield’s resilience in the face adversity has been impressive.”

Mr Hill added that Chesterfield Borough Council’s decision to build an enterprise centre on part of the Donut roundabout had ‘given potential investors a boost of confidence’.

Work is progressing well on the construction of the enterprise centre, which is expected to open next spring and will be another key element of the Northern Gateway project.

According to the borough council, the building will provide 32 ‘high-quality’ offices in a range of sizes over three floors – and is an ‘important development in Chesterfield’s post-coronavirus economic recovery plans’.

Councillor Tricia Gilby, the authority’s leader, said: “This is both an exciting and an important development for Chesterfield, and I’m pleased that work is continuing to progress despite the current challenges.

“The enterprise centre is key to ensuring that Chesterfield remains a thriving borough and will create lots of new opportunities for local businesses and people, supporting the sustainability of the town centre.”

The Northern Gateway scheme will also see ‘environmental street improvements’ around Elder Way and part of Knifesmithgate in a bid to to enhance this part of the town centre and make it more pedestrian friendly.

A number of other developments in the Chesterfield area are also advancing despite the coronavirus pandemic – including Revitalising the Heart of Chesterfield, Chesterfield Waterside and PEAK.
