Gavin Elliott, of Denby, started telling stories on his Facebook page for his three small grandchildren, called Poppy, Skyla and Oscar, who he is unable to see because of the current restrictions.

Their friends and many others started joining the story time sessions – and Gavin is now reaching more than 1,400 youngsters a week.

The 44-year-old, who works as a national accounts manager for Serene Stone, said: “There is no better feeling than when Poppy, Skyla and Oscar take a book from the shelf and ask me to read to them as they pull themselves up on to the armchair with me.

“Because of this and the unfortunate predicament we find ourselves in with Covid-19, lockdown and social distancing, I began posting on to Facebook a story once a day to keep the familiarity of story time for them all.

“Soon their friends were listening in – and their friends and their friends.

“Then requests for messages and books began to come in – plus drawings of grandad reading.

“The story time sessions last around six minutes each and are designed purely to put a smile on children’s faces at this testing time.”
