Politicians say the long-awaited project will reduce traffic on the busy A619 from Chesterfield to Brimington and Staveley, cut journey times on other roads and open up regeneration opportunities.

Chancellor Rishi Sunak confirmed in the Budget that the scheme was one of several major transport projects to be given funding.

Chesterfield’s Labour MP Toby Perkins said: “I remember telling a cynical voter on the Chesterfield Road at Brimington that it was a priority back in 2010, and they said ‘it will never happen’, and it has felt like that might be true through the ten years of austerity.

“But I am delighted that the collective campaigning that I have been doing alongside Chesterfield Borough Council, Derbyshire County Council, Midlands Connect and the local LEPs has finally resulted in today’s announcement. We always achieve more when we work together.

“This will speed up traffic that is just passing through Staveley and Chesterfield and free up space on those roads that are there for people who are accessing Chesterfield.

“Investment in our roads must come alongside investment in public transport infrastructure too, because the environmental damage done by our over reliance on cars is great, but in itself this is an announcement that will be hugely welcomed across Chesterfield.”

North East Derbyshire’s Conservative MP Lee Rowley described it as ‘brilliant news’.

“We’ve waited for nearly a century for the Staveley bypass and its looks like we are finally getting some momentum behind the project.

“The Government’s willingness to provide funding for the next stage of development is hugely welcome. There is still a long way to go, and no guarantees of full funding, but this is another step forward.”

Councillor Tricia Gilby, leader of Chesterfield Borough Council, said: “When complete the bypass will make a huge difference to residents. It should reduce the traffic travelling through Brimington and improve air quality in the area. The route will also further strengthen Chesterfield’s regeneration as it creates a better link between the town centre and the proposed HS2 depot in Staveley, and helps bring forward new housing.”
