Chesterfield Borough Council has granted planning permission to Erica Developments to bulldoze The Trumpeter Inn, on Harehill Road, Grangewood, and build 12 dormer bungalows on the site.

Permission was previously granted to redevelop The Trumpeter to create a new community centre for Grangewood in 2015.

Borough councillors for the area say they are disappointed these plans never happened but have backed the bungalows application.

Councillors Jenny Flood and Lisa Blakemore said in a statement: “As ward councillors we support this application, albeit with sadness we were not successful in having a village centre in Rother Ward at last.

“The bungalows are very fitting for that area.

“However, all we have is a GP surgery, which was built for Rother residents but now serves people from all over Chesterfield, and a pharmacy, not directly linked to the site.

“We are pleased that the area will be improved and, as has been said, it will help to reduce anti-social behaviour.”

Planning documents previously described The Trumpeter as “typical of a ‘new estate’ pub built in the late 1960s or early 1970s”.

Reports added: “The property looks rather dated and is regarded by many as unappealing, particularly during the day.”

Chesterfield Borough Council has imposed a number of conditions on the developers, including that work must begin within three years from now.
