Concerns were raised over the three show homes at the Avant Homes’ De Rhodes Point development on Cranleigh Road, Woodthorpe, in which all the lights and heating are allegedly left on for 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

It comes despite mention in the developer’s 2020 Sustainability Statement that it is “mindful” of environmental issues and that “in our offices and on-site, along with safety and efficiency, particular attention is paid to the use of natural resources and reducing our carbon footprint.”

Posting on Twitter, Leslie-Chow said: “Hi Avant Homes in your sustainability doc. you state that you are ‘mindful of environmental issues’ so can you explain how your three show homes on Cranleigh Road Woodthorpe having all room lights and heating on 24 hours a day seven days a week affects the enviroment negatively.”

Chesterfield-based Avant is also currently progressing with the new Waterside Quarter development, on the former timber yard site off Brimington Road, where it has also been noted that lights are left on in homes which are not yet occupied.

A spokesperson for Avant Homes said: “Our showhomes at De Rhodes Point are open daily for customers to visit by appointment. This means all lights and heating in our showhomes are switched on throughout each day to ensure they are ready for customers to view.

“Heating is temperature controlled to be held at a comfortable minimum and most lighting is turned off in the evening. A small number of lights remain switched on overnight for security.“
